Running in the Rain

4 Apr

This morning, I could not convince myself to climb out of my nice warm bed, despite its being in the mid-upper 40′s outside.  Well, as the forecast told us – it is raining.  My near future is a not as pleasant jog out in the cold, wet rain, or a boring run on the treadmill… I am Definitely getting what I deserve!  Though, I am actually looking forward to it – I’ve always enjoyed running in the rain, and I actually own all the appropriate gear to do so (ie: waterproof jacket and pants), so I don’t think its going to be a big deal at all.   I’m more concerned about getting my blue tooth headset to work, then i am getting wet!

One of the things I like about being outside is the changing weather.  While running into the wind can make your run noticeably harder (especially on those days where it seems to switch right as you get to the half way point), it also changes things. You might get to smell flowers in bloom, or the sewage treatment plant across the river (change isn’t always good after all.)  Then there are those hot days, that it starts to rain, and it feels like the heavens themselves have smiled down on you.  (We won’t bring up those days where it was chilly to begin with, and the rain makes you cold to the bone!).

It does raise the issue of how to get your running shoes dry enough for use the next day – but that is another post, for another day.  Once the weather truly switches to spring, I am looking forward to adding some trail running into my workouts – but I think cold rain and mud would be a bit much for me at the moment.  But for now, I am looking forward to running around my house, as the water comes down!

As a side note: It’s much harder to find pictures of males running in the rain then to find pictures of females (though this isn’t limited to the rain-running).. I am starting to believe that photographers are sexist pigs.. Or just realize women are prettier than men..

Maybe you should not run with the bluetooth and enjoy the music of the rain/your foot strike. I once ran in hurricane force winds when one was off the coast of Georgia -we obviously didn’t need to evacuate- and the ecstasy of running in the tempest was awesome.

Granted. Having the proper gear keeps you from getting sick. I need to get on that to resist the winds of San Francisco!

I love running without music in a pouring rain.. Unfortunately, as I am just getting back into running after an injury, the music right now helps me to not pay attention to how badly I am doing (compared to where I was 6 months ago.. Considering its just shy of three months for my surgery, I am doing well in recovering).

I’ve never gotten to do hurricane level winds, but I can see where that would be INCREDIBLE.. Though, it wouldn’t be the winds of San Francisco, but the HILLS I would be worried about! I didn’t even like driving a standard there!
